This is 2019 and development of BTRFS began in 2007. So it should be all good, right? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are interesting features I wanted to try out. Mainly, keeping snapshots. I&#8217;ve also been using EXT3\/EXT4, NTFS, HFS, APFS, FAT32, even <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ReiserFS\">reiserFS<\/a> back in 2006-2010, so I&#8217;ve seen my share of file systems. I&#8217;m willing to try something new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve heard 2 of my friends complain about this file system, but decided to try it because <strong>Synology&#8217;s Setup UI made me inclined to think this is preferable. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3188\" height=\"1772\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/sunapi386.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/image.png?fit=625%2C347\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-772\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sunapi386.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/image.png 3188w, https:\/\/sunapi386.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/image-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/sunapi386.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/image-768x427.png 768w, https:\/\/sunapi386.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/image-1024x569.png 1024w, https:\/\/sunapi386.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/image-624x347.png 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3188px) 100vw, 3188px\" \/><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/T5K_5EKxE0A?t=428\">YouTube<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t know who the target audience for this web UI is, but <strong>recommending the BTRFS is a huge mistake.<\/strong> As a home user with a lot of pictures, it is just <strong>so\u00a0unacceptably slow<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How slow is it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t have exact numbers, because they often time out. And I don&#8217;t want to go through the pain of waiting. I have about 16k jpeg files that in a flat folder. Simple operations are terribly slow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Moving 100 files into a folder takes couple of minutes, because there is a copy made for each file moved. <\/li><li>Doing <code>ls<\/code> (list all files in folder) takes forever, my terminal hangs up and never returns even after hours. <ul><li>On the Synology Drive UI, it takes minutes, because the web UI is paginated, about 500 files listed per page.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Deleting files takes as long as moving them.<\/li><li>Defragging like 1995 is back, so you must remember to periodically &#8220;scrub&#8221; your disks, which take days (I have two 4TB drives).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I regret so much using this shitty BTRFS system.<\/strong> Unbelievable. RedHat abandoned using this for all the right reasons, it&#8217;s hopeless. I&#8217;ll be spending a weekend moving my data to USB disks and reformatting to EXT4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Never again, BTRFS!<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have a Synology DS918+ NAS running BTRFS.
